Are Former ‘X-Files’ Stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson a Couple?

Summer of 2012 may go down in entertainment history as the era during which former co-stars were most likely to hook up.

First it was Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, who appeared together on ‘That 70′s Show,’ and now — much to the certain delight of ‘X-Files’ fans everywhere — it’s apparently Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny.

The pair worked together on the ‘X-Files’ TV series and the subsequent movie, and although their professional partnership spanned 15 years and the actors had palpable chemistry, fans of the franchise never got to see their characters — FBI special agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder — seal the deal on-screen.

But maybe devotees will like this even better: Anderson, who celebrated her 44th birthday on Thursday, and Duchovny, the 52-year-old star of HBO’s ‘Californication,’ are said to be living together in Los Angeles.

The news comes hot on the heels of the revelation that the twice-divorced Anderson recently split from her boyfriend of six years. Duchovny was once married to actress Tea Leoni, but after a rocky decade together that included his stint in rehab for sex addiction, sources say they quietly divorced three years ago.

It should be noted that neither Anderson nor Duchovny have confirmed the relationship — and even if the rumors are true, with three failed marriages and five children between them, will it even work in the long term?

The truth, as Mulder and Scully always said, is out there.
