Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio Claims Obama’s Birth Certificate Is a Fake

Looks like infamous “birther” Orly Taitz — who’s been repeatedly thrown out of court for her insistence that President Barack Obama is not a natural-born US citizen — has found herself a soulmate: Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Arpaio said Thursday that his crack team of volunteer investigators has “reason to believe” the president’s long form birth certificate, released last year by the White House, is a forgery. They have also cast doubt on the authenticity of Obama’s selective-service card, filled out in 1980 in his home state of Hawaii.

While Arpaio doesn’t think Obama himself had anything to do with the alleged forgeries, the controversial sheriff thinks there needs to be a “criminal investigation into the matter.”

And he’d know a little something about criminal investigations, being the subject of one himself by the US Department of Justice. The DoJ said in December there was “reasonable cause” to believe Arpaio has been violating Latinos’ constitutional and civil rights in a “pattern of misconduct” involving discriminatory policing practices, such as unlawful stops, detentions and arrests of Hispanics.

The claims of the so-called “birthers” who question Obama’s citizenship have been the source of much media coverage. The president himself has poked fun at them by including merchandise on his campaign website with his birth certificate printed on one side and the words “made in the USA” on the other.
