Two of baseball’s most well-known franchises have been giants in the league for a long time, but recently it seems they are both struggling. When it came to the playoffs, you could always count on the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees being in the mix. Now though, many other teams seem to be surpassing them in terms of the pennant chase.

The Red Sox came into 2012 hoping to erase the memory of their monumental collapse last season. Instead, injuries and managerial controversy has only made matters worse, helping to knock the team out of contention.

The Yankees had a huge lead in the AL East. Despite critics saying they were too old, they dominated for most of the season, but now it seems age has caught up with them, and their commanding lead is down to just one game. Are we looking at baseball’s next big collapse?
