Ten units from the Wichita Falls Fire Department, as well as units from Sheppard AFB, Cameron Gardens, and Burkburnett and have spent much of Monday afternoon battling a fire in thick mesquite between I-44 and Spur 325.

The blaze forced the evacuation of some homes in the area.  Although thick smoke covered much of the area, including Kate Haynes Elementary, fire officials say the school was in no immediate danger from the fire.

The Riatta Village Trailer Court was evacuated as a precaution and several streets were blocked for safety.

Officials say the first fire call came in at around 1:25 pm from the 3700 block of Nashua Drive.
