A tense standoff between a physical education teacher and his student has sparked a conversation about how teachers should behave.

Chris Passuello was suspended after video of him yelling at a student for refusing to put down his cell phone emerged during class last week at Hewlett High School, in Hewlett, N.Y.

A frustrated Passuello has clearly had enough of the student:

You don’t listen to anyone! I am respectfully asking you to put your phone down! You don’t! I’m respectfully asking you to stop talking! You don’t! “You just don’t stop!”

The student refuses to back down:

You don’t need to touch your face on my face! That’s the thing! You don’t have to take my [bleeping] bubble!”

The student also used the N-word.

Students have rallied to show their support for Passuello, whose actions have divided the community.

One parent said, "And to see a teacher finally do his job and put his foot down and say, ‘Enough is enough, put the phone away or get out,’ and the student to disrespect him in that manner, was absolutely ridiculous."

Other parents, however, say it's wrong for a teacher to talk like that to a student. It's unclear when or if Passuello will return to class. The student, incidentally, was also suspended.
