While some folks are busy sweating it out over the fate of “Two and a Half Men” or making book on how long before Charlie Sheen assumes room temp, the war over illegal immigration rages onward!  Oklahoma is working on new legislation to stop illegal immigration.  One proposed amendment makes it illegal to stop on the public roadways to pick up so-called ‘day laborers’.  Arizona has already implemented legislation.  I’m seriously considering a Sheriff Joe Arpaio tattoo.  I love that guy.  Texas, well, I don’t know just what we’re going to do.  There’s lots of talk, but I don’t see nearly enough action.  If you believe some of the information being gleaned from the latest census data, yours truly is about to become a certified minority in Texas.  But just how much of this marked increase in the Hispanic population of Texas is due to illegal immigration?  If you’re waiting on the feds to tell you, forget it.  Washington is drunk on denial.   What if the shoe were on the other foot?  What if Texans were crossing illegally into Mexico to set up shop?  Even IF there were a compelling reason for that on OUR side of the border, it just would not happen.  Mexico would not allow it.  I have read countless articles and papers on how people who enter Mexico illegally from, for example, Central America, are treated.  Denied ANY services, victims of extortion by Mexican officials, etc.  Mexico has the audacity to accuse us of ‘mistreating’ it’s citizens who come here illegally, but they do very little to treat their ‘citizens’ with care, much less anyone who enters their country illegally.  Asking people who come here illegally is not mistreatment.  It’s the law.  You can be ‘deported’ from Mexico at any time, without due process of any sort, but yet we are expected to allow anyone to cross our border and then ignore the fact that they did not follow the prescribed legal channels to enter our country?  And we’re expected to feed, clothe, educate, etc, at our expense.  You know what would happen to me if I crossed over to Old Mexico illegally.  They’d auction me off by the pound and a mighty pretty peso that would fetch, too.  I mean, have you seen me lately?  According to one state-sponsored travel site, Mexperience.com to obtain an ‘FM3 visa’, that is, one which allows you stay in the country over 6 months, just a small slice of the criteria you must meet is as follows:

“One of the criteria that the Mexican authorities require for the issuance of a FM3 visa is that the applicant prove that they have 'sufficient funds to sustain themselves while in Mexico' and/or a proven steady income.”

Oh really?  Can you just imagine the uproar from La Raza, LULAC, Al “Bullhorn Blower” Sharpton and others if the USA were to even think of trying to enforce such a requirement?  They’d set whole cities ablaze.  CNN would go wall-to-wall coverage for all 19 of their viewers.  People enter our country all the time without the proverbial pot to you-know-what in or the window from which to throw it out of!  The cost of illegal immigration just to our own state is staggering, to say the least.  According to FAIR, the Federation for American Immigration Reform:

Analysis of the latest Census data indicates Texas’s illegal immigrant population is costing the state’s taxpayers more than $4.7 billion per year for education, medical care and incarceration. Even if the estimated tax contributions of illegal immigrant workers are subtracted, net outlays still amount to more than $3.7 billion per year. The annual fiscal burden amounts to about $725 per Texas household headed by a native-born resident.”

And I could do a whole series on the illegal drug trade being fueled by the Mexican drug cartels.  Billions of dollars of dope polluting our streets year after year and very little is being done to stop it, that is, very little that is having a major impact.  The “War on Drugs”, while well intentioned, has barely put a dent in things and has cost us untold sums of money.  And no, before you start calling me out on it, I do NOT support the legalization of illegal drugs.  I see little benefit to making crystal meth available over the counter at your favorite drugstore.  And crack is after all whack, cause Whitney Houston said so.  And her word is good enough for me.  We are, slowly but surely, being pushed toward militarizing our southern border.  And the northern border won’t be far behind.  Those Canadians have been acting mighty fishy lately.  I think they may be smuggling some super dark maple syrup across the border.  There’s bound to be something in that Obamacare legislation that makes that a felony offense.  Seriously, things are ugly out there on the border.  The Mexican government clearly has no control within it’s own borders with regard to drugs, violence, etc.  But they feel qualified to tell us how we should handle our side of the border?  It’s time for our legislators in DC to stop talking tough and get tough, once and for all.  And while they’re at it, stop harassing states like Arizona and Oklahoma for trying to do what the Feds should have been doing all along.  We cannot afford any less than this any longer.
