If you’ve recently gotten sick and wondered if it was the flu, it may have been. Reports are coming out stating that there has been an increase in flu cases in the Wichita Falls area recently, which has lead to the Wichita County Public Health District to encourage people to get the flu shot. In addition to the flu, reports also state an increase in emergency room visits due to respiratory illness.

It takes approximately two weeks for the flu shot to take effect, so it’s better to get it done sooner than later.

How can you prevent getting sick? The Health District recommends frequent hand washing, covering your mouth while coughing or sneezing, and staying home when you’re sick.

The Health District will also be offering the flu shot starting Monday, September 23. You don’t need an appointment and the hours are Monday-Friday from 8:00am – 4:30pm. There is a fee for the shot ranging from $3.50 to $35.00 depending upon your insurance, family size, and monthly income.

The CDC recommends that anyone over the age of 6 months should get the flu vaccine, especially women who are pregnant, children under 5 years, and people with medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and chronic lung disease. They also remind people that a flu vaccine is needed every year since new flu viruses appear each year.

You can find out more about the flu shot on the CDC Web site, including frequently asked questions and what to expect when you get the vaccine.
