Longtime TRN Sports Editor Nick Gholson Dies at 66

After a long battle with cancer, longtime Times Record News Sports editor Nick Gholson died Sunday morning (Oct 13) at the age of 66.

A lifelong Wichita Falls resident, Gholson worked for the Times Record News since April of 1972 covering many sporting events including local games, MSU games, national bowl games, Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers and even the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

As an alumnus of Wichita Falls High School and Midwestern State University, Gholson enjoyed covering high school and MSU sports the most.

Nick Gholson is survived by his wife, Jenee, two children, Thomas and Christy, as well as their spouses, grandson, Nicholas, step granddaughter, Alyssa and one granddaughter on the way.

As passionate as they come, and a legend in his own right, Nick Gholson will be remembered by many.

Lee Anderson, coworker and longtime friend of Nick Gholson, says,

Needless to say, Nick was one of a kind. He truly loved his job and his family."

Former Times Record News reporter Lee B. Weaver says about Nick,

Nick Gholson was the quintessential hometown paper sports reporter. Knowledgeable. Hard working. Fair minded. And salty as hell. Our community was fortunate to benefit from his dedication, passion, and wit." 

Matt Ledesma, also a former Times Record News reporter, took to Facebook to say,

Before I left the paper, I told a friend I could see myself as the next Nick Gholson. Working at the TRN for the rest of my life in the hometown I love. That didn't happen, obviously. Now that I think about, it probably wouldn't ever have happened. I'll never be the writer or newsman Nick was. There won't ever be another Nick. He was a larger than life character, one that I had the privilege of working for. He gave me my first big break as a sports writer. For that I will always be grateful. Enjoy your eternal reward buddy. You deserve it."

A celebration of Nick Gholson's life will be held at the Midwestern State University D.L. Lignon Coliseum on Saturday, October 19 at 3:00 p.m. There will be a visitation afterward. Both are open to the public.
