Every year, we get the same paperwork from the school system prodding us to sign up for free and reduced meals.  Nowadays, we don't qualify.  Even back when my daughter was just entering school and we could qualify, we didn't take it.  My wife and I caught hell from a couple of school 'officials' over the years because of our stance on the issue.  So far as we were concerned, as long as a we had a dollar to feed our child, we would feed our child.  Excuse me for having a shred of independence!  This 'free' lunch program is anything but free.  Anyone and everyone in this country who pays taxes is funding this program.   Included in President Obama’s budget proposals this year was a $4.5 billion expansion of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act, a program to provide free lunches to low-income public school children. The ‘expansion’ goes well beyond what the program was originally intended for. The new and improved program would provide “free” lunches for all students.  You got it.  Everybody.  Richie Rich, put that wallet away.  The good taxpaying citizens of America got this!  It's already happening in Detroit.   Detroit Public Schools Chief Operating Officer Mark Schrupp told the Detroit Free Press:

“One of the primary goals of this program is to eliminate the stigma that students feel when they get a free lunch, as opposed to paying cash.  Some students would skip important meals to avoid being identified as low-income. Now, all students will walk through a lunch line and not have to pay. Low-income students will not be easily identifiable and will be less likely to skip meals.”

Oh really?  Stigma?  Haven't we taken this hyper-sensitivity crap just about far enough?  Because someone might be a bit embarrassed or get their feelings hurt, we're going to add billions more to our deficit and debt?  How stupid can we possibly get? The powers that be in D.C. are determined to make this the law of the land, coast to coast.   Guess once this goes national, they can stop sending the forms home.  Then they'll make us take the free meal, whether we want it or not.  It's not enough that the sugar police have taken over the cafeteria.  Now, the government will be there to tell you NOT to pay for the food, kids!  Take it, you little rug rats!   Free lunches simply don't exist.  Just one more reason that home schooling is so popular, don't you think?
