FRISCO, Texas (AP) — A 17-year-old North Texas youth must stand trial as an adult in the 2014 shooting deaths of his parents at the family's home.

Zachary Elliot Callens, who's now 17, was being held Friday on two counts of murder.

The Dallas Morning News reports a judge Thursday certified Callens should be tried as an adult, citing the brutality of the crime and his lack of remorse after the killings in Frisco.

Callens was 16 years old last August when his parents were shot to death. The victims were 48-year-old Ryan Callens and his 49-year-old wife, Maria Elena.

A lawyer for Callens says the home-schooled teen was socially isolated because his parents withdrew his privileges when he refused to do his assignments or household chores.
