1889 — John L. Sullivan beat Jake Kilrain in a 75-round, bare-knuckled match held in a secret location in Richburg, MI. to win the heavyweight boxing title. (More info.)

1898 — After losing a record 35 games in the 1897 season, Philadelphia Phillies’ pitcher Red Donahue no-hit the Boston Braves, 5-0. (More info.)

1941 — Boston Red Sox’ slugger Ted Williams hit a three-run homer off Claude Passeau of the Chicago Cubs with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the American League a 7-5 victory over the National League in the MLB All-Star Game at Briggs Stadium in Detroit. (More info.)

1946 — Major League Baseball increased its minimum player salary to $5,000. (More info.)

1949 — Outfielder Monte Irvin and third-baseman Hank Thompson became the first black players to play for the New York Giants. (More info.)

1967 — University of Kansas sophomore Jim Ryun set the world record in the 1,500 meters by running a time of 3 minutes 33.1 seconds at the Los Angeles Coliseum. (More info.)

1980 — Cincinnati Reds’ outfielder Ken Griffey was the Most Valuable Player, as the National League beat the American League, 4-2, in the MLB All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. (More info.)

1991 — Major league umpire Steve Palermo and former NFL lineman Terence Mann were both shot trying to prevent a robbery in Dallas. (More info.)

2000 — New York Yankees’ pitcher Roger Clemens hit New York Mets’ catcher Mike Piazza on the front of the helmet with a fastball in a game at Yankee Stadium. Piazza suffered a concussion and had to miss the All-Star Game. (More info.)
