When you take at a look at all the bottles and garnishes and containers behind the typical bar, you realize there is an almost limitless number of cocktail combinations. Despite this, drinkers tend to stick to a dozen or so standards. So which of these cocktails is the most popular?

According to Zagat's 2012 Mixology survey there is two-way tie for the top spot: the Manhattan (whiskey, sweet vermouth and bitters) and the martini ( gin and vermouth) each garnered 12 percent of the vote.

Next was the old-fashioned (whiskey, sugar, bitters and citrus) followed by the gin and tonic (we forget what's in that), and the margarita (tequila, triple sec and lime juice.)
