Wichita Falls Area Continues to See High Number of Flu Cases

The Wichita Falls/Wichita County Public Health District and United Regional Healthcare System have teamed up to get the word out about a high number of flu cases that are still being seen in our area. United Regional and Kell West Regional Hospitals have seen approximately 125 cases of flu and influenza-like cases since November 1, and they’re reminding citizens that there is still time to get a flu shot.

Though many flu strains affect people for 1-2 weeks, serious complications such as pneumonia may put you in the hospital. Complications can be especially high in women who are pregnant and people with other health conditions. In a press release issued by the city, they remind citizens to prevent the spread of the flu by:

• Washing hands often with soap and water, or using a hand sanitizer if water is not available;
• Covering your sneezes and coughs;
• Keeping hands away from your face;
• Avoiding people who are ill with the flu; and
• Preventing the spread of the flu to others by staying home if sick.

It is also recommended that children under 12 or anyone displaying signs of the flu to NOT visit patients in the hospital. If you believe you’re sick with the flu, call your physician to be treated in an outpatient setting.

Additionally, patients are encouraged to only come to the emergency room if they have these symptoms:

In Children

• Fast breathing or trouble breathing
• Bluish or gray skin color
• Not drinking enough fluids
• Severe or persistent vomiting
• Not waking up or not interacting
• Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
• Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough

In Adults

• Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
• Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
• Sudden dizziness
• Confusion
• Severe or persistent vomiting
• Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
