At 11:16 pm Friday night, a routine traffic stop turned deadly when a Wichita Falls police officer shot and killed 48-year-old Edward Washington III in the 500 block of Bonner while he was trying to evade police and fleeing in his vehicle.

The officer attempted to stop Washington for failing to signal a turn. Washington fled from the officer, turning east on Harding. While fleeing from the officer, Washington attempted a right turn onto Otis Polk Drive where he lost control of the vehicle and it collided with a fence.

Chief of Police Dennis Bachman writes in a news release,

As the officer exited his patrol car, Washington exited his car and confronted the officer. The officer fired his handgun, striking Washington in the chest. Washington was transported to United Regional Hospital where he died. The officer was not injured.

Washington’s body will be transported to the Tarrant County Coroner’s Office for autopsy.

Members of the Criminal Investigation Section, Crime Scene Technicians and Office of Professional Conduct responded to the scene. Their involvement in standard practice in an officer-involved shooting.
