Oklahoma Power Grid Issues Weather Advisory for Winter Storm
Oklahoma is one of the 14 states within Southwest Power Pool, and most of the states within the power grid are set to be impacted by winter weather this week. Southwest Power Pool has issued a weather advisory for its constituents to raise awareness of the potential impacts to the power supply.
The weather advisory from Southwest Power Pool is set to begin at midnight Wednesday, Feb. 12 and last through noon Thursday, Feb. 13. The weather advisory does not require utility customers to conserve energy, but it does inform them that there are potential threats to reliability among local energy providers.
Southwest Power Pool has issued the weather advisory because of the extreme cold temperatures and possible heavy snow and ice. Oklahoma is expected to receive freezing rain, snow and ice starting late Tuesday evening and into Wednesday morning.
Rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow are all expected. Up to one inch of snow and and sleet are possible in northern Oklahoma. Parts of northern, western and central Oklahoma could see .15 inches of ice.
Dangerous wind chills expected Wednesday evening.
After the snow and ice settles during the day on Wednesday, Oklahoma could see dangerous wind chills in the evening. Below zero wind chills are possible in northern Oklahoma with northly winds from 10 to 15 miles per hour. The actual air temperature Wednesday evening will be in the single digits and teens.
More rain and snow possible on Saturday, Feb. 15.
Oklahoma will get a break from the winter weather and freezing temperatures for Valentine's Day, but snow and rain may return on Saturday, Feb. 15. So if you have weekend-long Valentine's Day plans, be sure to stay weather aware!
