Big In Texas: The Largest Mall In The Lone Star State Is Enormous
Have you been to the mall so big you could absolutely get lost in it?
Big In Texas
Texas does everything bigger and better and that's why we've been featuring things that are "Big In Texas". Now when it comes to shopping, Texas went beyond big and ventured into enormous territory. Our winner is more than a mall, it's practically a city all by itself.
Number Two
Let's start with the runner up, just so you can get an idea of the scale of #1. Coming in at #2 is North Park Center in Dallas. This mall takes up 2,000,000 square feet and hosts a whopping 225 stores. Now what if I told you, at least in terms of stores, that #1 has nearly twice that much?
The Winner
The Galleria in Houston up the ante at 2,400,000 square foot. That doesn't sound like that much more, but inside the mall is 400 stores. Each year The Galleria hosts 35 million visitors. Interestingly enough, The Galleria was a much smaller project starting in 1970 with just 600,000 square feet of space.
Texas Malls
Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio all have a number of enormous malls, but to give you a real comparison, lets look at some malls in mid-sized Texas Towns. The South Plains Mall in Lubbock, Texas is 1,200,000 square feet with about 145 stores. The Westgate Mall in Amarillo is 800,000 square feet with about 100 stores. The Mall Of Abilene runs about 680,000 square feet with about 80 stores.
Not That Big
Now here's the bad news Texans, The Galleria, despite totally blowing away the competition in Texas, is only the 7th biggest Mall in America. Just for the record, #1 in the U.S. goes to the Mall Of America in Bloomington, Minnesota, with about 2,850,000 square feet and over 500 stores. Of, and it's only the 12th largest shopping mall in the world.
