Brake Fails on Solar Windmill as Storm Hits West Texas
When you think of West Texas, you might picture vast deserts, dusty roads, and the occasional tumbleweed rolling by. What you probably don’t imagine is a solar windmill spinning wildly out of control after a storm, all because a simple brake failed.
It's Not Supposed to Do That
Now, you’re probably wondering what happens when a windmill meant to capture solar energy loses its brakes during a storm. The wind picks up, the sky darkens, and suddenly, the windmill blades are moving at speeds they were never meant to.
Snap!
Finally, the blades break off of the main structure and are slung from the base. It's quite terrifying. The perspective of the video doesn't do that windmill any justice, it's several hundred feet tall.
So, if you ever find yourself in West Texas, take a moment to appreciate the windmills. They’re a little more dangerous—and dramatic—than they look.
