Here’s the thing – burglaries occur at roughly the same rate throughout the year, according to a report by Porch. But the burglaries that happen during December (aka the holiday season) are way costlier.

Cold-blooded thieves will take advantage of the fact that most of us have hundreds or even thousands of dollars worth of goodies set out under the Christmas tree. Someone looking to sell some goods on the black market can expect a big payday after robbing a house during the holidays.

The three types of items that are more likely to be stolen during the holidays are jewelry, technology, and clothes/furs. That makes sense as people tend to give more expensive gifts around Christmas time than any other occasion during the year.

And when it comes to holiday burglaries, Texas is sadly among the states in which burglaries claim the most value. The Lone Star State ranked 10th on the list with an average of just under $3,000 worth of items stolen.

Admittedly, burglaries can be hard to prevent. But, there are plenty of things you can do to help ensure you don’t fall victim to a holiday break-in. Get some great tips on how to protect yourself from burglary during the holiday season from Bob Vila.
