These are the Only Texas Rangers to Win the Home Run Derby
Tonight the home runs will be flying at Globe Life Field in Arlington. Let's see which Texas Rangers have had the best derby day.
Only Two Texas Rangers Have Ever Won the Home Run Derby
Since 1985, the Home Run Derby has been one of the highlights of the MLB All Star Week. Throughout the years, several Texas Rangers have been a part of the annual competition. Some of had memorable performances like Josh Hamilton in 2008 and Nelson Cruz in 2009. Only two Rangers have ever called themselves Derby Champion.
Ruben Sierra 1989
Ruben Sierra was drafted by the Rangers and would make his MLB debut back in 1986. He would go onto have a very lengthy MLB career playing for several organizations. He would play one of his final seasons as a pro for the Texas Rangers in 2003. In 1989, the Home Run Derby had four AL hitters going against four NL hitters. It was just one round, whoever hit the most was the champion. Back then, ties could happen. Texas Ranger, Ruben Sierra and Cincinnati Red, Eric Davis were declared co champions in 1989.
Juan Gonzalez-1993
Probably one of the more forgotten Home Run Derby performances happened in 1993. Juan Gonzalez of the Texas Rangers was the official winner, but the moment everybody remembers from this day was Ken Griffey Jr. During the Home Run Derby, Griffey struck the Camden Yards warehouse with a home run. To this day, he's the only player during a competitive event to hit the warehouse. People think one of Griffey's three home run derby championships happened in 1993. Juan Gonzalez was the official winner and to this day is the youngest player to ever win the Home Run Derby.
