Residents in southwest Texas have been warned to be on the lookout for black bears after multiple sightings in neighborhoods in the Alpine area. Texas Parks and Wildlife – Trans-Pecos Wildlife District issued the warning on Facebook on Thursday, April 10.

Residents were advised to secure attractants such as livestock food, pet food, domestic poultry, and livestock.

NEXT: How Likely Are You to Have Your Car Stolen in Texas?

I can’t think of much that would scare me more than a bear on my front porch. Even though black bears are smaller than brown bears (aka grizzlies), they can get up to around 600 pounds, according to National Geographic Kids. They also eat everything in sight as they prepare for hibernation. There’s nothing more terrifying than a hungry 600-pound carnivore.

Now, if you’re used to dealing with black bears, you’re probably laughing at me for my fear of bears. You most likely think I’m overreacting. But you have to understand I’m from North Texas, and we don’t have those big old critters around these parts (and I would like for it to stay that way).

Anyway, now that I’ve expressed my fear of bears, you can rest assured that Alpine is not high on the list of Texas towns I’m hoping to visit here in the near future. Hopefully they’ll get their black bear problem solved ASAP.
