Major I-27 Traffic Switches Coming to Amarillo and Canyon
Road construction in the Amarillo area is never-ending. Just when something is fixed, they tear up something else. Then they go back and tear up the thing that took five years to fix. It's a vicious cycle that will never end.
Unfortunately, with as much traffic as we have and that continues to grow, road construction will never end.
I-27 has been under construction for what seems to be an eternity. We thought we had seen a break between Amarillo and Canyon when they finally finished the bridge over Hollywood/Loop 335. Nope! They announced that they were expanding I-27 between Amarillo and Canyon to 3 lanes and that it would take four years to accomplish.

One can say they seem to be making progress, but that stretch of road is now somewhat dangerous, and people drive way too fast.
Traffic is about to get worse as they are throwing a switch-up on us.
When Will the I-27 Traffic Changes Begin?
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, they are changing some of the traffic patterns. Starting on Thursday, August 14, 2025, the traffic patterns on I-27 are changing. Southbound traffic on I-27 will be switched to the widened shoulder from FM 2219 to south Amarillo. This change will mean that certain entrance and exit ramps will be closed in those areas at various times. They are expected to be done with that portion of work by Saturday, August 16th.
However, the following Thursday, August 21, 2025, northbound traffic on I-27 will be switched over to the southbound lanes, south of Amarillo to FM 2219. This work will take place at night from 7 pm to 6 am. This work is expected to be done by Saturday, August 23rd.

Why I-27 Construction Won’t End Anytime Soon
If you travel on I-27 often, you might want to allow more time for your commute and prepare for the changes that are coming up. Even though they are making progress on this upgrade, they still have a way to go before it is finished.
