Thursday night: Franklin 16 - Coronado 13; Irvin 17 - Bowie 13

In the 30th edition of the West Side Bowl,Franklin edged out a three-point victory over their rivals Coronado, 16-13, to secure their seventh consecutive win in the series. Franklin defensive back Kyler McDavitt picked off Coronado quarterback Ben Wilson with less than 90 seconds left in the game as the Thunderbirds were driving to try and tie or win the game on the final possession. Coronado threw two interceptions in the game and also had a safety that the Cougar defense forced after they failed to score on a goal-line offensive possession.

Franklin improved to 3-2 on the season, while Coronado was handed their first loss of the year (3-1), as they will face Pebble Hills in a must-win district matchup next week.

Big shout out to the Irvin Rockets and head coach Jon Elliot for the 2-2 start to the season after a 17-13 win against Bowie (2-2) on Thursday night. Irvin led 17-7 in the first half and maintained the lead throughout the second half to secure the victory in a must-win situation for the Rockets to keep playoff hopes alive.

Game of the Week: Ysleta vs. Austin

In what should be an excellent test for both squads, Austin (2-1) will host Ysleta (4-0) in a key matchup on Friday. Ysleta quarterback Rodrigo Martinez has already racked up 11 total touchdowns on the year, while Evan Martinez (no relation) has totaled 233 receiving yards and one interception. On the other side, the Panthers are led by a stout run game paced by tailbacks Sal Duarte (347 yards) and Oscar Flores (182 rushing yards).

Prediction: Ysleta 24 - Austin 21

Final playoff spot for grabs? Hanks vs. Andress

The district 1-5A division II outlook feels as if Del Valle, Canutillo and Chapin should lock in a playoff spot. Hanks (3-0) and Andress (1-3) will be among the schools fighting for the final postseason bid in the loaded district.

The Knights are coming off a 42-21 thrashing against Horizon last week, while Andress struggled mightily in their game against Chapin, losing 54-8. Hanks is led by quarterback Jordan Morales, who has eight touchdown passes on the year. Meanwhile, Andress goes through their quarterback Jamari Milton (874 passing yards).

Prediction: Hanks 35 - Andress 13
