Amarillo Police Fatally Shoot Man Who Had Fake Gun
AMARILLO, Texas (AP) — A Texas Panhandle man who pointed what turned out to be a fake gun at police has died after being shot by an officer.
Amarillo police say an autopsy was scheduled Monday on 33-year-old German Mata.
Lt. Erick Bohannon says officers early Sunday responded to a 911 call about a neighborhood man causing some problems. Bohannon says the man pulled a pistol out of his waistband and pointed it at officers.
Bohannon says an officer shot Mata, who died later Sunday at an Amarillo hospital. No officers were hurt.
Police later determined Mata had displayed a replica of a pistol.
The officer has been placed on administrative leave during a review of the fatal shooting.
Further details on the original disturbance weren't immediately available.
