A Houston lawyer has filed suit against Starbucks and the barista who served her after being burned by spilled coffee in 2014.

According to the lawsuit, Katherine Mize was picking up coffee for herself and her co-workers in the drive-thru of an area Starbucks in July of 2014. The barista, identified in the suit as Brie, was handing Mize her coffee when she alledgely squeezed the cup, causing the lid to come off and spill onto Mize. Mize stated,

It went all down the front of me and on the seat behind me and started burning me immediately. I got out of the car and then just started hollering.

Mize's lawsuit claims that no one from Starbucks helped her or even filed an incident report. The barista Brie, who had started at Starbucks the week before, is named in the suit for failing to secure the lid, failing to safety handle the coffee, and failing to render aid. The suit also accuses Starbucks of not properly training a new employee and calls the coffee an unreasonably dangerous product.

Mize was taken to the hospital, saying that her skin was peeling off due to the burns,

It was a really serious injury. Like everyone else I kinda laughed at the coffee stories until I heard more about them and realized women got really injured. Then I realized it’s not just, ‘Oh well, I spilled coffee.’ It burned through my skin, there was no skin left.

Starbucks issued a statement saying they take the safety of their customers seriously and are investigating the incident to determine the appropriate actions. Mize's is seeking $200,000 to $1 million in damages for past and future physical pain, mental anguish, physical impairment, medical expenses, loss of earning capacity and physical disfigurement.
