New York City politicians have fired back against Texas Senator Ted Cruz after Cruz took a shot at the Bronx in a recent speech.

While speaking to conservative group Americans for Prosperity on Saturday, Senator Cruz said he was tired of being lectured by northern politicians about immigration,

Now, I understand that Manhattan is very concerned with their security with the Bronx, but it's a little bit different on 2,000 miles of the Rio Grande,

Many New Yorkers took offense to what they felt was an outdated stereotype of the once-crime ridden city.  City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito called Cruz's comments "pathetic" on Twitter, adding,

It's sad that Ted Cruz would use tired and wrong stereotypes about the Bronx to try advance his extreme political agenda. The truth is the Bronx is growing and prospering and doesn't need to be insulted by Tea Party extremists like Ted Cruz/

Senator Charles Schumer, the likely target from Cruz's statement, offered his opinion of Cruz's shot,

Senator Ted Cruz ought to join the majority of Republican voters, business leaders, and so many Republican Senators in doing the right thing to fix our country’s broken immigration system, rather than pouring demagogic oil on the flames.

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. issued a statement on Sunday,

Ted Cruz's willingness to traffic in the outdated stereotypes of past decades is disgusting, and is totally devoid of truth. The Bronx has seen unprecedented positive growth in recent years, and Senator Cruz's infantile attempt to score cheap political points by slandering our borough is revolting, and unworthy of the title of United States Senator.
