1904 — American Thomas Hicks won the marathon at the Summer Olympics in St. Louis in 3 hours 28 minutes and 53 seconds. (More info.)

1905 — Ty Cobb of the Detroit Tigers made his major league debut in his team’s 5-3 win over the New York Highlanders. (More info.)

1912 — Earl Hamilton of the St. Louis Browns no-hit the Detroit Tigers, 5-1, at Detroit. (More info.)

1937 — Joe Louis beat Tommy Farr by 15-round decision at Yankee Stadium in New York City to retain the heavyweight boxing title. (More info.)

1978 — Japanese baseball hero Sadaharu Oh of the Yomiuri Giants hit his 800th career home run, the most in the history of Japanese baseball. (More info.)

1979 — In a wild US Open tennis match, Ilie Nastase lost to John McEnroe in four sets after Nastase was held in default by the umpire, yet reinstated by the referee. The televised match was delayed when fans pelted the court with trash. (More info.)

1991 — American Mike Powell set the world long jump record of 29 feet 4-1/4 inches, breaking Bob Beamon’s 23-year-old mark set in the 1968 Summer Olympics. (More info.)
