Everyone loves Halloween, right? Mmmmmmaybe  not. A new study on YouGov shows that nearly one fifth of us plan on pretending to not be home when the trick-or-treaters come by.

Sometimes it's fun to answer the door, comment on the children's costumes, share a knowing glance with the parents waiting a few feet away. Sometimes you just need a little quiet time with what's left of your Halloween treats. According to this study 65 percent of the respondents said they planned to give out sweets to the kiddos. The next most popular answer was a full 18 percent planning to turn off the porch light and retreat to the back of the house.

The remainder of the results showed 8 percent hadn't made up their minds yet, 6 percent planned on giving something other than sweets. That's their prerogative, but something tells me that this just might get them tricked.

And the bottom, and I do mean bottom, 3 percent said they planned on answering the door but giving the children nothing. These are also the people most likely to get coal for Christmas.

I remember vividly the first Halloween that I lived in my house. I didn't know anybody in the neighborhood. Nobody in the neighborhood knew me. I figured I'd be safe from trick-or-treaters. I was so very wrong. The view from my front window looked like the Halloween street scene from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

After disappointing a few too many children I did retreat to the back of the house. This year I'm prepared. And I'll probably still be eating my leftover treats right up to Thanksgiving.
