Sometimes, even the most diligent news network can make a mistake. But when two networks botch a report only minutes apart? Well, that qualifies as news itself.

Both CNN and Fox News reported that the Supreme Court struck down the centerpiece of President Obama’s health care bill today. But in reality, the court upheld the law, effectively allowing Obama’s health care reform to survive.

In a 5-4 decision, the court ruled that the individual mandate, which requires most Americans to obtain health insurance starting in 2014, is constitutional. And yet, CNN correspondent Kate Boulduan initially filed a report to the contrary. She did, however, correct herself later and explain that the decision was “thick,” “legally dense” and “very confusing.”

Fox News, likewise, ran headlines boldly proclaiming that the individual mandate had been struck down and ruled “unconstitutional,” but later admitted they got it wrong due to “conflicting information.”

What do you think? Was the mistake understandable or just sloppy?
