Oklahoma State Is Bringing Outdoor Hockey To Boone Pickens Stadium
I think it's fair to say that when people think about Oklahoma, unless you've been an on-again, off-again fan of the semi-pro hockey team that occasionally swaps OKC for Tulsa, hockey is not on your radar.
That's fair. I mean, I know hockey exists here. My childhood was at the height of the Mighty Ducks movies and the Sooner State had a youth hockey explosion over that time... but since then? Out of sight, out of mind I suppose.
Oklahoma State University has a hockey team. Did you know that? I either didn't or just plain forgot, but OU has a team too.
Here's the big headline... This winter, OSU is not only taking its biggest Division II hockey game outdoors, they're putting the ice rink right in the middle of Boone Pickens Stadium.
On January 30, 2027, the Cowboys will host OU in what's being called Bedlam on Ice. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m., and it'll be the first hockey game ever played inside Boone Pickens Stadium.
Last season, the Cowboys made it all the way to the Division II national championship game. They also put a pretty good thumping on OU when the teams met at Tulsa's BOK Center last February, winning 13-2 in front of some 15,000 ticket holders.
So apparently, there's a pretty good appetite for hockey in Oklahoma, even if most of us aren't thinking about it when we talk college sports.
The plan is to lay the rink across the football field, and it's becoming an even bigger public event. The OSU press release says everyone will get the opportunity to skate on the ice in the days leading up to the matchup, adding that those details will come later.
If OSU manages to pull off this extremely expensive surrogate Bedlam, it's going to be awesome.
