It's time to take it back for another Throwback Thursday story. Of course, if you live in Victoria, you know about Victoria Mall. However, the OG's in Victoria also know there was a second mall, The Town Plaza Mall, located at the corner of Airline and Laurent. When it was open, this was very convenient and centrally located.
While some of the buildings remain, it looks nothing like it used to The flagship store was JC Penny with that iconic escalator. This was the original location for Luby's Restaurant and featured a 50s-style soda shop in the middle. There was also a Beall's and a Walgreens.
Take a look at this YouTube video that takes us through the remnants of the Town Plaza Mall before it was taken over by the University.
The beginning of the end of the Town Plaza Mall was in 1981, when the Victoria Mall that stands today was built. Today, that building houses two different entities. The original JC Penny space is now owned by Our Lady of Victory and is now the OLV Cathedral Center.
The other side, now detached, is owned by Texas A&M Victoria. There is still an original part of the TPM that still stands on the far end. It still sits vacant today. If you have any pictures or memories of the Town Plaza Mall, please share them with us and send us a message inside our station app.
