Looks like over 100 Texas cities failed their audits and because of this, they cannot raise property taxes on their citizens.

Back in December, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said he was looking into Texas cities illegally raising property taxes on citizens because of Senate Bill 1851. Essentially, if you want to raise the property taxes in your city, you have to go through a financial audit. Well the deadline has passed for those audits and SEVERAL Texas cities have failed to submit the proper paperwork. Good news if you live in the following cities, your property taxes can not go up.

Yes, that is correct 135 Texas cities cannot raise their property taxes this year. “I will not allow cities to unlawfully raise taxes on hardworking Texans. That is why I took aggressive action against over 130 Texas cities to hold them accountable and ensure they comply with state law,” said Attorney General Paxton. “Cities cannot fail to abide by state audit requirements without consequences. My office will continue to aggressively enforce Texas law to protect taxpayers across the state.”

We will wait and see if these cities change their ways next year.
