Former Walgreens at Plains and Western Is About to Change

In 2024, Amarillo lost an important store, leaving the neighborhood lacking a quick stop for medicine and other needs. In September 2024, the Walgreens at 1600 S. Western closed its doors. The building has sat on that corner for the last two years.

A Long-Empty Amarillo Building

The neighborhood in that area was left without a pharmacy and a nearby place to get OTC meds, snacks, and health and beauty items. However, that will soon change for those near Plains Blvd and Western.

According to a permit filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, the former Walgreens is being converted into a Dollar Tree. The 15,045 sq ft building will soon be remodeled into a Dollar Tree.

Construction Timeline and Cost

Construction is estimated to begin August 31, with completion by the end of November. The cost of the renovation is expected to be $759,472.

Amarillo's Growing Dollar Tree Footprint

This will be the 11th Dollar Tree in Amarillo, plus one in Canyon.

Dollar Tree is celebrating 40 years of business this year and is a great store to find products at a deep discount. Most items are $1.25, with some costing $3 or $5 for Dollar Tree Plus items.
