If you’ve lived in El Paso long enough, the name Gary Monteleone probably sparks a smile. Known for his quirky empire of themed spots like Wrap & Roll Psychic Burger and the Haunted Motel, his most talked-about creation has to be the dinner theater tucked away in Central El Paso: Monteleone’s Back Alley Hideout. You have to reserve your tickets to be a part of this dinner theater experience but let me show you how it all plays out when you get there!

At first glance, the building looks like any other house in the neighborhood. But follow the little sign pointing down the alleyway, and you’ll discover a hidden door that opens into something completely unexpected. Step inside, and you’re greeted by a whimsical, eccentric world filled with knight’s armor, lanterns, puppets, paintings, and enough props to transport you straight into another realm. It’s the kind of place that makes you forget you’re in a quiet El Paso neighborhood.

The night starts with dinner service, giving you time to take in the ambiance before the action begins. But sitting on the table are cards...questions about a murder. That’s right: tonight’s entertainment is a murder mystery, and the audience is invited to solve it for a chance to win free tickets to another show.

The play Till Death Do Us Part isn’t Broadway, and that’s exactly the point. What it delivers instead is charm, humor, and a sense of community. Local UTEP acting students light up the stage with quirky performances that pull you into the mystery. Between acts, guests are encouraged to leave their seats, inspect clues left at the stage, and debate theories with their tables. By the time the curtain falls, the whole room is buzzing with energy, laughter, and applause.

Confetti, Clues, and Community

The highlight of the night might be the little extras that make Monteleone’s so memorable. Before the show begins, servers hand out confetti poppers and tell you to set them off whenever you feel the moment is right. Throughout the performance, bursts of confetti erupt from different corners of the room, sparking laughter and adding to the chaos of the mystery.

It’s messy, unpredictable, and absolutely delightful, much like Monteleone’s entire brand. Everyone left the theater grinning, and not a single person seemed disappointed.

A Quirky Local Treasure

What makes Monteleone’s Back Alley Hideout so special isn’t just the props, the food, or even the mystery, it’s the way it makes you feel like part of something bigger. The show is immersive, the atmosphere is playful, and the performers pour their hearts into the production.
