Were the girls on the volleyball team overworked in practice?

Head coach Shelly Barberee submitted her resignation on Friday to Texas Woman's University. Shelly is the volleyball coach and the program has been in the news recently after eight players were sent to a local hospital. The girls were suffering from rhabdomyolysis, which is a breakdown of muscle tissue that releases potentially damaging proteins into the bloodstream.

"Although the investigation remains underway, Texas Woman's University's initial belief is that overexertion coupled with dehydration during practices last week caused these student-athletes to experience rhabdomyolysis," said Monica Mendez-Grant, vice president of student life, in a statement published on the school's website.

The good news is the girls have been released from the hospital, but they have not been medically cleared to return to volleyball. Before you start blaming the head coach, she has not been with the team since August 12. This incident happened last weekend.

"Today, I have decided to resign from my position as head volleyball coach at TWU, which is in no way related to student-athletes' hospitalization," Shelly Barberee said. "I am working diligently to address matters in my personal life and need to place my focus there."

An investigation is currently underway to find out what happened. The investigation could take as long as 90 days. Looks like we will all have an answer by then.
