Waiter Receives $5,000 from Customers — But It’s Not a Tip

A generous couple gave a lump sum of cash to a waiter at D’Amico’s Italian Market Café in Houston, Texas and not just because he has provided consistent, terrific service.

Greg Rubar had been waiting on these particular patrons for eight years and they decided to gift him with $5,000 in cash so he could replace his car, which was flooded on a freeway after a particularly nasty thunderstorm. The cash gift was not tacked onto a bill, either.

Rubar revealed that the customers, who wish to remain anonymous in the true spirit of giving, gave him the money out of the kindness of their hearts. One of the customers said, “I’m not going to be giving you a tip for awhile. Take this money. Go buy yourself a car.” Then, he handed him a wad of cash.

Rubar had been relying on taxis and his employer lending him a catering truck (when available) to report to work.

“Nobody ever gives me anything,” said Rubar, who was hesitant to accept the money. “They just wanted to help me out. They’re nice people.” When he tried to refuse their generous gift, “they wouldn’t hear of it.”

The cash was a gift, since it did not come attached to any bill. “The next time I see them I want to offer to pay it back. To me, it would be more of a gift if it was a loan,” Rubar said.

Something tells us they may not accept a payback.
