Potential large-scale flooding along and on either side of the Wichita River have subsided and the city of Wichita Falls has revoked the evacuation order.

Residents can begin reentry into the affected areas. There is still some water on the roads and residents are advised not to drive through standing water.  Residents may need to park their vehicle and walk to their homes.

Pet Pick Up

The Animal Services Center, located at 1207 Hatton Road, will be open tonight, Sunday, May 24th, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm and Monday, May 25th from 8:00 am to Noon for residents to pick up their pets. For more information please call 228-9941.

Health Risks From Flooding

The Wichita Falls Wichita County Public Health District has more health-related information for the citizens of Wichita Falls concerning the recent flooding. Everyone recovering from the flooding should consider the health risks involved. Here are some tips to keep everyone safe and healthy:

  • Please throw away any food that came in contact with flood waters or was in a refrigerator without power.
  • Eating unrefrigerated or contaminated/ spoiled food can lead to serious illness due to bacterial growth. Remember, food does not have to smell bad, to be bad.
  • If cleaning out a flooded home please avoid skin contact with contaminated materials or water and keep the area well ventilated.
  • Keep children and pets out of flood waters; do not let them play in it
  • Resist the temptation to begin cleaning up before the water recedes. Play it safe and wait until the water has gone away completely.
  • If you have an open wound or cut that has been exposed to flood waters and have not had a tetanus shot in the last 5 years you should get a booster shot.
  • You have up to 72 hours to be vaccinated from the time of exposure to flood water for the vaccine to be effective.

If you will be working in a flooded area and have not had a tetanus shot in the last 10 years, you should get a shot as a precaution.

Anyone who has come in contact with flood waters and needs a tetanus shot can come to the Health District building at 1700 Third Street and receive one starting Tuesday afternoon, May 26.

However, please note that due to operations involving flood recovery, the Health District’s Immunization clinic WILL NOT be open the morning of Tuesday, May 26. It WILL REOPEN in the afternoon from 1:00 pm–4:30 pm.
