Lawton’s KidZone Mural Gets A Colorful Community Makeover
Lawton's KidZone received a major update last year. The park at 38th Street desperately needed the update, but residents were concerned about what would happen with the tile mural that first opened with the park in 2000.
KidZone reopened with new playground equipment in October of last year. The new equipment replaced old, wooden equipment that was first installed in 2000. Along with the playground, KidZone opened 26 years ago with a tile mural that featured handprints and designs from local kids.
When the park was being redone, residents were concerned about what would happen with the tiles and if local children could add new tiles to the mural. Some children were able to make new tiles for the mural, but when KidZone reopened last year, no updates had been made to the tile mural.
City of Lawton begins refurbishing the tile mural at KidZone.
The City of Lawton provided an update on the KidZone tile mural in a video to its official Facebook page on Friday, April 10, as the Parks and Recreation Department has begun working on refurbishing the mural. In the video, a local contractor can be seen removing old tile from the mural.
Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation Kelvin Ingram said in the video that they are working to salvage the original tiles designed by local children and the local contractor will spruce up the tiles before reinstalling them on the mural.
Ingram also said they have a few hundred new tiles that local children recently made, and those tiles will be added to the mural. And as they work to refurbish the mural, Ingram stated that the mural will most likely expand and be updated to a more modern design.
Community encouraged to reach out to the Parks and Recreation Department to inquire about adding a tile to the mural.
As the Parks and Recreation works on refurbishing the tile mural at KidZone, Ingram encourages Lawton residents to reach out to the department about adding a tile to the mural. So if your child didn't make one before the reopening of KidZone, they still have an opportunity to be added to the mural!
