For a few brief moments this week, Lake Texoma wasn’t just a popular weekend destination... it was a full-blown reptilian crime scene.

Fishermen near Treasure Island reported seeing something in the water bobbing just offshore, drifting between boat wakes like it owned the place. As word spread, several bystanders snapped grainy photos with all the clarity of a 2002 flip phone, which naturally made their way onto Facebook with captions like “Y'ALL BE CAREFUL.”

It was a Croc!

Now, that portion of Oklahoma is no stranger to alligators and such, but a crocodile would be pretty out of the ordinary.

All the same, and most people don't know this, America is home to crocodiles. Quite literally the American Crocodile. They're not the huge crocs we all learned about watching Steve Irwin wrestle along Australia's Northern coast... they're a bit more ridiculous looking with long, slender jaws.

Word spread faster than a wildfire in Love County. Park rangers were alerted. One guy even brought a drone. The buzz was real. A croc... In Oklahoma... In fresh water... Just floating around like this was the Amazon.

Unlike the Aussie crocs, American crocs also don't mind the freshwater... and with the recent heat wave Oklahoma has endured, the whole thing is plausible.

Like all rumors do across the Sooner State, a small story turned into something even greater each and every time it was told and retold. As the story evolved, the questions poured in.

Where could it have come from?

How is that even possible?

Did someone set it loose in Lake Texoma?

Where are the Epstien files?

Relatable.

Just as quickly as the legend took hold, it fell apart.

One boater decided to tempt fate for a closer look at the beast... and by the time they pulled up alongside it, it turned out to be exactly what the rumor was... A Croc.

Someone lost their big size 11 camo rubber Croc clog on the water.

So no, there is not a crocodile prowling Lake Texoma, tho you can spot several pairs of croc-hide boots at the boat ramp.

You never know what you'll encounter during summer in Oklahoma. For a few hours on a hot July afternoon, Lake Texoma had itself a wild story.

Be safe out there. And keep an eye on your footwear.

Oklahoma's Ten Best Fishing Lakes

If you know, you know. When it comes to fishing, not all lakes are equal. While you can fish and catch fish in just about every body of water in the Sooner State, there are only a handful of lakes Oklahoma anglers get serious about.

Here are the top fishing lakes in Oklahoma.

Lake Altus-Lugert and SWOK's Underwater Ghost Town

Like most rare things, conditions have to be just right to see one of Oklahoma's hidden gems. In years of good and average rainfall, the lost town of Lugert stays buried beneath the waves... but in dry years, especially those stricken by drought, you can walk around this pre-statehood townsite while enjoying one of Oklahoma's prettiest areas, Quartz Mountain State Park.
