Police Change Story on Shooting of North Texas 15-Year-Old After Body Cam Footage Released

Officials have changed their official story on the circumstances of the shooting of a 15-year-old in a Dallas suburb after the officer's body cam footage contradicted his story.

Jordan Edwards was shot in the head while leaving a party in Balch Springs Saturday night. On Sunday, Balch Springs police Chief Jonathan Haber held a press conference explaining that officers were responding to reports of noisy teenagers in the area and had heard gunshots when approaching the area. Chief Haber apologized to Edwards' family, saying the vehicle Edwards was a passenger in had been backing towards the officer in "an aggressive manner".

However, Chief Haber officially changed the department's story as the officer's body cam footage contradicted the "backing up in an aggressive manner" story, showing the vehicle driving away when the officer opened fire with his rifle. According to NPR's report on Monday's statement,

Chief Haber said his review of the officer's body camera video indicated the shooting may not meet his department's standards.

The officer responsible for the shooting, who has yet to be identified, has been placed on administrative leave while the Dallas County Sheriff's Department and the Dallas County district attorney's public integrity unit investigate the matter. Lee Merritt, the attorney for the Edwards family, spoke at a news conference Monday saying the family would continue to push for the termination and arrest of the officer responsible,
