Confirmed Cases Of Dengue Fever In Texas
Have you heard about the recent dengue fever cases in Texas? With ten confirmed cases this year, it's time to get serious about mosquito protection. All cases in 2024 so far have been linked to international travel, but there's concern that local mosquitoes could also be spreading the disease, especially after Hurricane Beryl left standing water—perfect breeding grounds for these pests.
Jennifer Shuford, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services, warns, “Many mosquitoes in Texas are capable of spreading diseases, such as West Nile and dengue. While often mild, these diseases can sometimes lead to severe illness.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a health advisory due to a historic surge in global dengue cases, reaching record numbers in 2024. The U.S. has already seen 2,559 cases this year, with Florida, New York, and California among the hardest hit. In Puerto Rico, a public health emergency was declared after 1,498 cases were reported.
Dengue symptoms include fever, nausea, vomiting, headaches, and rashes. More severe symptoms can lead to shock, internal bleeding, and even death. The CDC advises seeking immediate medical attention if you experience severe symptoms like belly pain, vomiting blood, or extreme fatigue.
So, what can Texans do to stay safe? Here are some top tips:
- Use insect repellent.
- Wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved clothing.
- Keep windows closed or use screens.
- Dump standing water around your home.
- Be extra cautious when traveling to areas with dengue outbreaks.
