IRVING, Texas (AP) — The AAA Texas travel agency says nearly 2.5 million Texans will be traveling during the upcoming Labor Day holiday, a 4.1 percent increase from last year.

The agency says improved consumer confidence is prompting more people to hit the road for a final extended summer getaway. The number of travelers represents a post-recession high.

AAA defines the travel period as trips of at least 50 miles from home extending anytime from Thursday to Monday.

It's estimated that 2.1 million Texans will travel by automobile, about 222,000 by air and another 160,000 by other means such as train, bus or cruise ship.

A AAA survey shows people plan to travel an average of 558 miles roundtrip while spending $649 on transportation, accommodations and other expenses.
