The University of Texas at Austin has blocked access to the popular video-sharing app on its Wi-Fi and wired networks, following a directive from Governor Greg Abbott requiring all state agencies to remove the app from government-issued devices. The move, citing concerns over data harvesting and potential sensitive information being offered to the Chinese government, has prompted similar actions from other Texas universities including the University of Texas at Dallas and Texas A&M University System.

Dutch politician Michiel P. Hoogeveen dicusses the differences between the Chinese version and the Western version of the app.

Governor Abbott's directive also requires state agencies to create their own policies regarding the use of TikTok on personal devices by February 15th. While some universities are still waiting for state guidance, others like the University of North Texas have already banned the use of TikTok on their networks.

This move by Texas universities is just the latest in a growing trend across the country, with more than half of states in the U.S. banning the use of the social media app on government devices in recent months.
