No stranger to controversy, President Trump is now under fire for openly offering to destroy the career of a Texas state senator.

During a meeting with Sheriffs from across the country on Tuesday, Trump opened the floor for comments and concerns. Rockwall County Sheriff Harold Eavenson spoke up about a Texas state senator who is pushing for legislation that would require a conviction before authorities could seize money. Sheriff Eavenson went on to say that he told the senator that the drug cartels in Mexico would build a monument to him if such legislation passed. Trump replied,

Who is the state senator? Do you want to give his name? We'll destroy his career.

Sheriff Eavenson said he appreciated Trump's retort because it showed that the President is on his side. According to the Dallas Morning News, Eavenson believes the senator, whom he refuses to name as to not publicly attack his character, is misinformed,

Some people sold him a bill of goods about the fact that just regular citizens are getting stopped, getting their money seized. I'm not saying that has never happened, but I promise you it is in the minuscule minority. It doesn't take long to connect the dots when you make a score and then maybe a dog gets on their car, and that money's been around dope.

While Trump's remark was followed by laughter in the room and a smirk on Trump's face, not everyone found it funny. Within hours of the remark, a resolution was being passed around senators in Austin demanding that Trump maintain "the civility and decorum that are essential to a functioning democracy." The resolution, which states that a threat by the President against a state senator should be taken as a threat to all state senators, has so far been signed by seven Democrat senators. To have the resolution openly debated on the floor, it will need to be signed by all eleven Democrat senators and at least 8 Republican senators.
